National Pina Colada DayNational Pina Colada Day

Pour yourself a cold one to celebrate this fruity cocktail for National Pina Colada Day on July 10th. The name pina colada means strained pineapple in Spanish, a hail to one of the drink's signature ingredients.

Pina Coladas are made with pineapple juice, cream of coconut, and rum blended or shaken with ice. The earliest written record of a pina colada dates back to 1922. However, the stories of the pina colada’s creation are set in 1954.

One of the main stories is that a bartender named Ramón “Monchito” Marrero prepared the drink on August 16, 1954, at the Caribe Hilton’s Beachcomber Bar in San Juan. Another story places the first creation at the Barrachina Restaurant in 1963 and gives credit to its head bartender, Ramon Portas Mingot.

Regardless of who the first person to make a pina colada actually was, make sure to enjoy the national drink of Puerto Rico this July 10th for National Pina Colada Day.
