National Donut Day

National Donut DayNational Donut Day

National Donut Day is celebrated on the first Friday in June which places this year’s celebration on June 3rd. Donuts themselves are said to date back to the 19th century when the mother of a New England ship captain made them for her son and his crew.

National Donut Day doesn’t just celebrate the deep fried doughy treat, but also the Salvation Army Lassies who brought the sweet snacks to soldiers on the front lines during WWI. The initiative was started by a doctor looking for a way to boost the morale of the injured men he tended to.

The doctor distributed donuts to the men in the infirmary hoping to raise their spirits.

One of these men was Lieutenant General Samuel Geary who had the idea to start a fundraiser to pay for the doctor to continue to provide the treat to patients.

The Salvation Army became involved with the effort and eventually sent 250 volunteers to France to set up and run social centers, little more than huts, but incredibly effective at meeting the needs of the soldiers. The holiday was set up, in part, to drum up donations to fund this donut endeavour.

So this June 3rd, grab a dozen of your favorite or an assortment of flavors to celebrate National Donut Day.
