National Cheeseburger Day
National Cheeseburger Day
Fire up the grill to celebrate this backyard classic for National Cheeseburger Day on September 18th.
While there are a number of competing stories around the origin of the cheeseburger, the general consensus places credit with Lionel Sternberger who was working at his father’s sandwich shop, the Rite Spot, in Pasadena, California. The 16-year-old Lionel either added the cheese out of curiosity or, even more curiously, was told by a passing vagabond that he should add cheese.
Another California restaurant, O’Dell’s, also claims to be the origin of the cheeseburger with the item having been on their menu since 1928. The O’Dell’s version was smothered in chili and cost a whopping 25 cents. Other contenders include Kaelin’s Restaurant in Louisville, Kentucky, Humpty Dumpty Drive-In in Denver, Colorado, and even Steak n’ Shake founder Gus Belt who applied for a trademark on the name in the 1930s.
Whether you head out to your favorite fast food spot or throw a few burgers on your own grill, be sure to savor America’s favorite sandwich on September 18th for National Cheeseburger Day.
