National Apple Dumpling Day
National Apple Dumpling Day
Celebrate this cultural staple in American cuisine with National Apple Dumpling Day on September 17th.
Apple dumplings are made by filling a dough wrapper with peeled apple quarters and sweets and then baking or boiling it. They can be finished with any number of toppings such as nuts, syrups, whipped cream, ice cream, etc.
They began as a peasant dish popular in England, Austria, and Bavaria before being carried to America by colonial immigrants. The first apple dumpling recipe appeared in print in the U.S. 1747 in Hannah Glasse’s cookbook. Other recipes for the dumplings appeared throughout the years and they were even mentioned on a list of unmatched American foods penned by none other than Mark Twain.
