National Animal Crackers Day

National Animal Crackers DayNational Animal Crackers Day

National Animal Crackers Day is celebrated each year on April 18th. While most would say animal crackers are more of a cookie than a cracker, the way the dough is layered to make the tasty biscuits is what lands them solidly labeled as a cracker.

The sweet snack was first introduced to the US in the late 19th century. In 1871, Stauffer’s Biscuit Compay started commercial production of its circus crackers which proceeded to dominate the animal cracker market until 1902 when National Biscuit Company, now Nabisco, came out with their Barnum’s Animals.

The new competitor’s success was mainly driven by the brand’s ingenious packaging, which looked like circus train cars each with a detailed image of traditional circus animals. The boxes were initially marketed to be used as Christmas ornaments, but many kids found other uses for the bright, toylike packages, solidifying their place in the memories of millions.

Regardless of which type of animal cracker you prefer, April 18th is the day to celebrate the sweet and whimsical biscuits and their long history of joy-making.
