National Acai Bowl Day
National Acai Bowl Day
April 6th is National Acai Bowl Day. While the exact origins of many food celebrations are a mystery, the first official National Acai Bowl Day was a sponsored event in 2013.
Despite the newness of the holiday, the acai bowl itself has a long history in its homeland of Brazil. Originally served as a dessert, the modern version of the dish was made famous by Carlos Gracie whose family served acai bowls to the people that would come to dive off Brazil’s coast.
The tasty treat was brought to the U.S. in the early 2000s after the founders of Sambazon became enamored with the acai bowl on a trip to Brazil. The superfood brand specializes in sourcing acai berries from Brazil and was instrumental in the organization of National Acai Bowl Day.
The acai berry itself is often hailed as a superfood for its high concentration of antioxidants. While acai bowls hail specifically from Brazil, the acai berry, which grows on the acai palm tree, can be found throughout South and Central America.
Celebrate the day with your favorite toppings of fruit, seeds, granola, or chocolate on your acai bowl for breakfast or as a treat anytime.
