According to legend, Popsicles were invented in 1905 when Frank Epperson, only 11 years old at the time, left a mixture of water and powdered flavored drink mix out on his porch overnight. A cold snap moved through and froze the liquid with the stir stick still inside.

In 1922, Epperson shared the frozen drink on a stick at a fireman’s ball where it was loved by all. The next year, he sold the treat-on-a-stick at a Alameda, California, amusement park. The year after that, in 1924, Epperson filed for a patent on the “Epsicle” ice pop. It was later renamed the Popsicle after children commonly referred to the frozen treat as Pop’s sicles.
