National Trail Mix Day
National Trail Mix Day
Crack open a bag of this camping classic for National Trail Mix Day on August 31st.
Trail mix, as its name suggest, was developed as a stable food to be taken on long trials while hiking to provide energy without going bad or making a mess in your pack.
The invention of trail mix is often accredited to two California surfers in 1968 who mixed together peanuts and raisins. However, trail mix is mentioned a decade earlier in Jack Kerouac’s novel The Dharma Bums.
Today there are a number of trail mix variations that include a host of nuts and seeds like peanuts, cashews, almonds, and sunflower seeds as well as more exotic elements like dried coconut, mango, pineapple, and of course, raisins. For a sweeter take, some even add chocolate, though the go to practice is to use candy coated chocolates like M&M’s to keep things clean in the trail mix bag.
However you like to make your mix, make sure to pack a bag of this energizing salty snack and go out and enjoy nature on August 31st for National Trail Mix Day.
