National Tequila Day
National Tequila Day
Raise a glass to this ancient spirit on July 24th for National Tequila Day. Made with blue agave, at least 51% to officially qualify, tequila has been distilled in one form or another since 1,000 B.C., but the spirit didn’t get its modern name until 1666.
In 1795, Don Jose Antonio de Cuervo, yes that Jose Cuervo, distilled his first batch of Vino mezcal de Teqila de Jose Cuervo. This event marks the beginning of the modern tequila industry.
Tequila, like other regionally named spirits, can only hold the title if it comes from the specific regions in Mexico. The main region is Jalisco where most tequila comes from, but other regions include Tamaulipas, Nayarit, Michoacán, and Guanajuato.
So whether you prefer to do shots of Jose Cuervo or mix your tequila into a margarita, be sure to have a nip on July 24th for National Tequila Day.
