Grab your sweetheart or your best pal and a good sturdy straw to celebrate National Chocolate Milkshake Day on September 12th.

The milkshake owes its existence to the electric blender, but also to eggnog. In 1885, an eggnog-type drink was invented by mixing together milk, eggs, and whiskey. From there, milkshakes took another leap forward in 1910 with the invention of the Hamilton Beach Cyclone Drink Mixer.

The first official milkshake was invented only 12 years later in 1922 at a Walgreens in Chicago. Ivar “Pop” Coulson added two scoops of vanilla ice cream to a malted milk drink that was a standard offering at Walgreens at the time. He named his creation Horlick’s Malted Milk and quickly grew to become one of the most popular soda-fountain offerings of all time.

So don’t miss out on this tasty frozen treat on September 12th for National Chocolate Milkshake Day.
