National Cherry Popsicle Day
National Cherry Popsicle Day
Take a moment to savor this classic summer treat for National Cherry Popsicle Day on August 26th.
The predecessor to the Popsicle, the Epsicle, was accidentally invented by an 11-year-old boy named Frank Epperson. He left a pitcher of powdered drink mix out overnight with the stir stick still inside. When the mixture froze in the cool night air, the Popsicle, or Epsicle, was born.
Epperson debuted the frozen treat in 1922 at a fireman’s ball and it was a huge success. From there he expanded into selling the Epsicle at an amusement park in Alameda, California, and got a patent for his invention.
In 1925, Epperson sold the rights to the Popsicle to the Joe Lowe Company who held the rights until 1989 when Unilver took over rights and production. The cherry Popsicle has been a staple flavor from the start and is still one of the most popular flavors of Popsicle today.
So whether you crack one apart and share it or have a whole double to yourself, be sure to grab a red one on August 26th for National Cherry Popsicle Day.
