National Bomb Pop Day
National Bomb Pop Day
Celebrate this tasty and patriotic summer treat for National Bomb Pop Day on June 30th. While the first popsicle was invented in 1905 by Frank Epperson, Bomb Pops were first created on July 30th, 1955 by D.S. Abernethy and James S. Merritt in Kansas City while working for Merritt Foods.
The Bomb Pop was a hit as its patriotic coloring struck a cord with many Americans at the time as the Cold War got underway. However, in 1989, Popsicle released its Firecracker Pop that closely resembled Merritt Food’s original Bomb Pop.
Popsicle won a significant advantage in the red, white, and blue frozen treat war and Merritt Foods went belly up in 1991. Luckily, Bomb Pop production was taken over by Well’s Dairy and the feud between Bomb Pop and Firecracker Popsicle continued until 2014.
In 2005, the Bomb Pop celebrated its 50th anniversarry and with it National Bomb Pop Day was formed in commemoration. Today, Bomb Pops come in a variety of flavors and colors, but the original red, white, and blue is still a popular favorite.
Whatever flavor you choose, and even if you prefer the Popsicle version to the original, make sure to savor this sweet frozen treat on June 30th for National Bomb Pop Day.
